- Our upstairs bedroom carpet is decades old. Is it worth cleaning, or are we better off replacing it?
Usually worth cleaning first, and it costs a lot less to find out. In the older two-story homes here, the upstairs bedroom carpet is often the only carpeted area in the house, and what looks like permanent damage is frequently just packed-in soil, pollen and traffic-lane dulling that comes out. What cleaning won't fix is delamination, backing that has gone brittle, seams that have opened, or fibers worn down to the backing on stair edges and doorways. We'll tell you which one you have before we start, and if it's genuinely worn out we'll say so rather than sell you a cleaning that won't change anything.
- We have wool and cotton rugs sitting directly on original hardwood. Can you clean them in place?
Small spot work, yes, with care. Anything more than that and we'd rather lift the rug and work on it away from the floor. Those 1900s–1930s finishes don't forgive standing moisture, and neither does the wood underneath. When we do treat a spot in place, we block the rug up off the floor and control how much moisture goes in, then check underneath before we leave. Wool and cotton also react differently than synthetic carpet to heat and to the wrong cleaning agents, so we identify the fiber before choosing an approach rather than after.
- How long does carpet stay damp here?
Drying is one thing the inland San Gabriel Valley climate helps with. The dry air and warm temperatures move moisture out quickly, so carpeted bedrooms are typically walkable soon after and fully dry the same day in most cases. Rugs over hardwood are the exception. Those we dry deliberately and check, because the floor finish matters more than the schedule. If a room is closed off or shaded, we'll leave air moving and tell you what to expect.
