My hallway carpet is matted flat and probably original to the house. Is it worth cleaning or should I just replace it?

Usually worth cleaning first. A lot of the single-story stucco tracts here still have their original cut-pile wall-to-wall, and the fibers in the hallway aren't always worn out so much as crushed and packed with fine dust. Cleaning lifts the pile and often brings a good part of the color back. What we can't fix is fiber that's abraded away at doorways and traffic turns, or backing that's separated. We'll tell you which one you have before we start, and if the carpet is past the point where cleaning buys you anything, we'll say so instead of taking the job.

How fast can someone come out to look at it?

San Fernando is a small city and we're working the north Valley daily, so getting to you is rarely the bottleneck. Most requests get scheduled within a day or two, and we can often do a walkthrough and quote the same day you call. If you're in a duplex or a small apartment building and need to coordinate with a landlord or a tenant's work schedule, tell us that up front and we'll set a window that works instead of a vague half-day.

Why does my carpet get dirty again so fast even though I vacuum?

Two things stack up here. First, this is the hottest, driest part of the Valley, and the fine alluvial dust off the wash and the open lots around town gets in through every door and window. Santa Ana wind days and fall ash make it worse. That dust is powdery enough that a household vacuum doesn't pull all of it out of a dense cut pile, so it settles down at the base of the fibers and grinds. Second, most homes here carry more foot traffic per room than average, with multigenerational households and full houses, so the same three or four paths take all the wear. Cleaning gets the embedded grit out; entry mats and a hard-surface runner at the busiest doorway slow down how fast it comes back.

We had a dog years ago and the smell comes back when the house heats up. Can that be dealt with?

That's one of the most common calls we get in this city. Nearly all the postwar tracts here are on slab, and urine that soaked through the carpet and pad into concrete doesn't leave on its own. When indoor temperatures climb in summer, the salts in it reactivate and the odor returns even though the carpet looks fine. Surface cleaning won't touch it. It takes treating down to the pad and the slab in the affected spots, and in bad cases pulling and replacing the pad in that area. We'll check the extent first, because it's usually smaller than people fear and occasionally larger.
