Carpet Cleaning FAQ — Sun Valley, CA
Common questions from homeowners in Sun Valley and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
When can we walk on the carpet again after you leave?
Plan on four to six hours before the carpet feels dry underfoot, and closer to eight in a shaded room with the windows shut. Sun Valley works in our favor here: low humidity most of the year and valley heat that routinely hits 95-105F in summer pull moisture out fast, and we speed that along with air movers and your ceiling fans. Winter rain weeks from November to March run longer, so we may leave fans running or ask you to bump the heat. You can walk on damp carpet in clean socks right away, but keep furniture off and shoes off until it is fully dry.

What does the appointment actually look like from arrival to finish?
We start by walking the rooms with you, checking fiber type and pointing out spots we think will lift and spots we do not. Then we vacuum dry soil, pre-spray traffic lanes and stains, agitate with a brush or rotary tool, and let the solution dwell. Hot water extraction follows, pulling the loosened soil and product back out of the pile, and we finish with a grooming rake and air movers. Most single-story stucco ranch homes in the east San Fernando Valley run two to four hours depending on square footage and how many spot treatments are involved.

Hot water extraction, shampoo, dry method: which one will you use on my floors?
Hot water extraction is our default. It injects heated solution under pressure and vacuums it straight back out, which is what Shaw, Mohawk and Stainmaster warranties generally ask for. Shampooing uses a rotary brush and foam and still has a place on heavily soiled commercial-grade loop carpet, though it leaves more residue behind. Low-moisture or dry compound cleaning suits wool and wool-blend goods like Karastan and Masland, or an apartment hallway that has to be back in service in an hour. We pick based on fiber, soil level and how fast you need the room.

What is a realistic cleaning schedule for a house like mine?
Once a year covers a quiet household with no pets. Add kids, dogs, or a household that comes and goes through a slab-on-grade side door and you are looking at every six to nine months. Sun Valley adds its own load: fall Santa Ana winds carry dust and ash, and the aggregate and recycling yards on the valley floor keep fine grit in the air, so it tracks in year round. Traffic lanes and entry areas can be done on their own between full-house cleanings.

How is my quote figured out, and what does it cost to find out?
The estimate is free and there is no obligation attached to it. Price comes down to how many rooms and how much open floor there is, the fiber and construction of the carpet, how soiled the traffic lanes are, whether pet urine treatment or specialty spotting is needed, and how much furniture has to be moved. We look at the actual rooms, not a guess over the phone, and you get a firm written quote before anything gets wet. That number is what you pay unless you add rooms or services yourself.

Do I need to clear the rooms before you arrive?
No. We move sofas, chairs, coffee tables, dining sets and light dressers as part of the job, and we set foam blocks or protective tabs under the legs so nothing bleeds or rusts onto damp fiber. What we leave in place: pianos, large china cabinets, waterbeds, wall units, electronics and anything with a fragile top. It helps if you clear breakables off surfaces and pick up toys and shoes from the floor. Beds and heavy pieces can be cleaned around, or you can shift them and we will get the whole floor.

Are there spots you know you cannot remove?
Food, drink, mud, pet accidents, grease and general traffic soil usually come out, and Stainmaster and other treated nylons release most of it well. What resists us is anything that dyed or damaged the fiber itself: bleach, benzoyl peroxide from acne wash, drain cleaner, mustard and turmeric, red dye drinks on light carpet, permanent marker, some plant fertilizers. Wear patterns in a hallway are abrasion, not dirt, and cleaning will not restore crushed pile. We tell you which is which during the walkthrough so nothing surprises you afterward.

Is any of this a problem for my dog or my toddler?
Our solutions are biodegradable, fragrance-light and rinse clean, and we finish with a clear rinse so nothing sticky stays in the pile to attract soil. Kids and pets can be back on the carpet as soon as it is dry. During the work itself we ask that pets stay in another room or the yard, mostly because of hoses, cords and an open front door. If someone in the house has asthma or a chemical sensitivity, say so when you book and we will adjust the products.

Can you handle the couch, the area rugs and the tile floors too?
Yes to all three. Upholstery gets fiber-matched cleaning for microfiber, cotton blends and leather, done at lower moisture so cushions dry the same day. Wool and cotton area rugs, including Karastan and Anderson Tuftex pieces, are cleaned on site or picked up for a full wash depending on dye stability and how much pet damage is present. Tile and grout is cleaned with pressure and hot water and can be sealed after. Booking these with a carpet appointment saves you a second trip charge.

Do you have openings today, and how far do you travel?
Same-day slots open up most weekdays, and morning calls have the best odds. We work Sun Valley and the surrounding east San Fernando Valley, this City of Los Angeles district north of Burbank, including the low-lying valley floor near the Tujunga Wash and the Big Tujunga alluvial fan. Our regular work is the 1940s-1960s postwar tract ranch homes and small bungalows here, plus the later apartment and duplex infill, all of it slab-on-grade or shallow crawl space with no basements to worry about. Tell us your cross streets and we will confirm arrival time.
